About this word

Ná is a negative verbal particle used only in the imperative mood. It prefixes h, without a hyphen, to following vowels but does not affect consonants:

• Ná habair (é): don't say (it).
• Ná bris iad: don't break them.
• Ná lastar tinte: no fires (literally, fires are not to be lit).
• Ná hóltar tobac: no smoking (literally, tobaco is not to be drunk [sic]).
• Ná páircáltar: no parking.
• Ná loctar: no parking (alternative expression).
